Women’s History Month 2025: Why one study says New Jersey, New York better for women

March is International Women’s History Month, and the New Jersey-New York metro area has seen a boom in female-owned businesses while making some gains in terms of woman’s equality.
In fact, that is one of the metrics WalletHub considered in its “Best and Worst States for Women” study, which placed both New Jersey and New York in the top ten of states best suited for women’s success.
WalletHub: New Jersey, New York top states for women
WalletHub analyzed several metrics in determining the ranking of women-friendly states in its study: job security; median income; unemployment rate; share of women-owned business; woman equality and the number of women who voted in the 2020 Presidential Election.

Given those metrics, WalletHub numbered New York as the fourth-best state for women, while New Jersey placed eighth.
New Jersey scored high marks for the percentage of women voters who voted in the 2020 election, and for having the fourth-lowest unemployment rate in the nation among women.
WalletHub credited New York for having the fifth-lowest female homicide rate in the country, and for being tied with New Jersey in terms of women’s life expectancy at birth.
Delaware, Pennsylvania have work to do in terms of best situations for women
While New Jersey and New York fell within the top ten of WalletHub’s Best and Worst States for Women study, Delaware and Pennsylvania clearly have some work to do.
Delaware ranked 13th in WalletHub’s study, and Pennsylvania ranked 24th.
Delaware ranked 11th in the women’s economic and social well-being metric, and 17th in women’s healthcare and safety.
Similarly, Pennsylvania ranked 33rd and 18th, respectively.
All states have work to do for women’s equality
While New Jersey and New York have done enough to rank in the top ten of WalletHub’s Best and Worst States for Women study, analysts made it clear that every state has work to do.
”Women still lag behind men when it comes to economic prospects, executive positions and political representation,” said WalletHub Analyst Milvionne Chery Copeland in comments included with the study. “On top of tackling these important issues, the best states for women also ensure that they have access to high-quality health care, receive the same educational opportunities as men, and live in safe communities.”
