China’s Trina Solar has reportedly set a new world record for the conversion efficiency of solar modules.

The company’s large-surface-area, n-type, fully passivated HJT modules achieved an impressive efficiency of 25.44% in laboratory tests, with results certified by the Fraunhofer CalLab, a renowned solar research institution in Germany, reported Reuters.

Passivation technology plays a crucial role in enhancing solar cell performance by covering defects on the surface of the cells.

Cell efficiency is defined as the percentage of solar energy that is converted into usable electricity.

Higher cell efficiency can lead to reduced space requirements for solar installations and lower overall costs.

Professor Martin Green at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, which held the solar cell efficiency record for decades, remarked on the significance of this achievement.

“In the long run it is all about efficiency, so even if some sequences are at the moment more costly than others, what tends to happen is that as the industry gets itself into a new technology the cost comes down quite quickly,” said Professor Green.

Trina Solar’s chairman and CEO Gao Jifan stated that the company will continue to invest in research and development of passivated solar technology to maintain its leadership in the industry.

HJT technology currently represents a small portion of the market, with solar consultancy InfoLink estimating it will account for 7%, 8% and 9% of high-efficiency solar cell capacity in 2024, 2025 and 2026, respectively.

Meanwhile, TopCON, or tunnel activated passive contact, cells are projected to dominate the market over the next five years, the report stated.

In addition to marking a record for HJT technology, the results signify a new milestone for the photoelectric conversion efficiency of single-crystalline silicon solar cell modules, according to Trina Solar’s statement.

“Trina Solar achieves new world record for solar module conversion efficiency” was originally created and published by Power Technology, a GlobalData owned brand.
