The Payne’s Broad Street Dagwood sandwich is a favorite among locals and Alabama visitors and has earned praise from Tasting Table.
The Broad Street Dagwood is a 6-inch sandwich piled high with roast beef, turkey, ham, bacon, Swiss and American cheese, all nestled between three slices of sourdough bread. It’s finished off with fresh lettuce, tomato, mayo and pickles for the perfect bite.
Founded in 1869 by William Henry Payne, Payne’s started as a pharmacy. In the 1930s, the iconic 20-foot countertop was added, becoming a staple of the shop’s charm.
