Triston Casas might not be locked into a spot on the 2025 Boston Red Sox after all.
The fourth-year slugger has been a subject of trade speculation since the start of the offseason. Most notably, multiple reports indicated the Red Sox could include Casas in a deal for a frontline starting pitcher.
However, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow recently threw cold water on the Casas rumors.
“I’m not totally sure where it comes from,” Breslow told reporters last week when asked about Casas rumors. “We’re not shopping Triston. We see him as a guy that can hit in the middle of the lineup for a really long time here in Boston.”
Story over, right? Well, not so fast.
On Sunday, MassLive’s Chris Cotillo suggested a Casas trade still could be on the table.
“(Breslow) didn’t say ‘we aren’t trading him,'” Cotillo wrote on the X platform. “There’s always a path from ‘not shopping him’ to claiming ‘we got an offer we couldn’t refuse.’ And other teams have been told he’s in play.”

Whether Casas eventually is traded this offseason remains to be seen. For now, he’s set to enter the 2025 season as the Red Sox’s franchise first baseman.
After hitting .263 and slugging 24 homers in 2023, Casas last season regressed to .241 and 13 home runs while being limited to just 63 games due to a rib injury. He returned late in the campaign and hit just .224 with five homers in September.
