Recent murder charges reportedly tied to Phoenix boy’s 2022 kidnapping, slaying

An arrest has been made in connection with a 2022 case involving the kidnapping and killing of a Phoenix boy.
Javier Antonio Rubio Munoz, 34, is charged on suspicion of murder, kidnapping and conspiracy to commit murder in a Dec. 19, 2022, incident in the Maryvale area, according to court documents.
Phoenix-based media outlets have reported Rubio Munoz’s charges are related to the death of 17-year-old Jesse Sainz-Camacho. The teen’s remains were recovered on Dec. 26, 2022, in a rural area in Maricopa County. Police said he was kidnapped in an early morning home invasion seven days earlier in the area of North 88th Avenue and West Indian School Road.
Court documents list the same time, date and residential area for the offense Rubio Munoz is accused of committing as for Sainz-Camacho’s kidnapping. Firearms were used in the crime, according to charging documents.
Police at the time revealed that a pair of armed men were captured on surveillance footage as they broke into the home. The men shot a sleeping man before taking Sainz-Camacho and fleeing in a car, police said. The man who was shot and survived was Sainz-Camacho’s grandfather, ABC 15 reported.
ABC 15 further reported that charging documents stated that Glendale police determined Sainz-Camacho was responsible for the Dec. 17, 2022, shooting death of Rubio Munoz’s 30-year-old brother-in-law, Victor Daniel Ruiz Reyes.
When asked Saturday by The Arizona Republic for confirmation, a Glendale police spokesperson said the department would look into the matter on Monday.
Rubio Munoz’s Form IV, or charging documents, included a redacted probable cause statement, which the Maricopa County Clerk of the Superior Court provided to The Arizona Republic just before 5 p.m. on Friday.
“Aside from what is in the Form IV regarding Rubio Munoz’ arrest, I do not have any further information to share. The investigations remain active,” read a Saturday afternoon email from Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Phil Krynsky.
Rubio Munoz made multiple illegal entries into the United States, court documents say. The charging documents also state Rubio Munoz was part of the Sinaloa Cartel, 12 News reported.
Court records show Rubio Munoz has a preliminary court hearing set for Tuesday.
