Mar. 13—One person died in a house fire on Main Street in Rumney early Thursday morning, according to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
The Rumney Fire Department received a report around 2:25 a.m. for a fire at the single-family home at 27 Main St., according to a news release. Wentworth and Plymouth provided automatic aid, according to Rumney fire.
A second alarm was called immediately with flames visible from the firehouse.
“When the initial crews arrived, they saw widespread flames and attempted a search of the home but were pushed back by deteriorating conditions,” the news release said.
Firefighters were able to search part of the first floor before being forced out because of heavy fire and a partial roof collapse, Rumney fire wrote on Facebook.
“Crews on scene gave 110% in incredibly heavy fire conditions searching for a victim,” the post reads.
A water source was set up at a pond at Rumney Bible Conference approximately a mile away. Trucks shuttled water from there to the scene.

The victim’s body will be brought to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy to verify their identity and confirm their cause and manner of death, according to the news release.
