Dec. 1—The Maryland attorney general’s office is investigating a fatal shooting after police fired at an armed man, leaving investigators unsure if duty weapons or the suspect’s own killed him.

Around 3:10 p.m. Saturday, police responded to the 10000 block of American Pharoah Lane in Laurel for a report of a domestic disturbance, according to a Sunday news release from the police department. Upon arrival, officers’ body-worn camera footage showed officers encountering a “female victim” on an outside upper ledge of a house and a man at the window inside the home with a loaded long gun, the release says.

The suspect allegedly refused to drop the weapon, which led to two officers firing at him, according to the release.

Once officers entered the residence, they found the suspect dead with multiple shell casings from an unknown weapon and several firearms at the scene, the release says.

According to police, preliminary findings make it unclear whether gunfire from officers or the suspect’s own weapon resulted in his death.

Three occupants of the home were evacuated unharmed, and no officers were injured, the release says.

Per Maryland law, the Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division has assumed the investigation into the shooting.
