Freeze warnings have been issued in multiple counties in Georgia during a cold front which is currently sweeping across the U.S.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued the alerts for 24 counties: Quitman, Randolph, Terrell, Lee, Worth, Clay, Calhoun, Dougherty, Early and Baker, as well as Coffee, Jeff Davis, Appling, Wayne, Bacon, Pierce, Atkinson, Ware, Brantley, and Glynn. The Warnings also cover Echols, Clinch, Charlton and Camden.

A freeze warning is issued when “significant, widespread freezing temperatures are expected” and a frost advisory is used “when the minimum temperature is forecast to be 33 to 36 degrees on clear and calm nights during the growing season,” according to the NWS.

In Coffee, Dale, Henry, Quitman, Clay, Randolph, Calhoun, Terrell, Dougherty, Lee, Worth, Early, and Baker, a freeze warning issued in the early hours of Tuesday is in place from 1 a.m. on Wednesday until 9 a.m. local time on Wednesday.

“Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing,” the warning says.

The NWS has warned residents to take precautions to shield delicate plants from the cold, and to insulate and drain outdoor water pipes to avoid freezing and potential bursting. The NWS has also recommended that inground sprinkler systems be drained and aboveground pipes be covered to safeguard them against freezing temperatures.

In the remaining counties, a freeze warning is in place from 11 p.m. local time on Tuesday until 9 a.m. on Wednesday. “Take measures to protect young children, the elderly and the homeless. To prevent water pipes from freezing; wrap or drain or allow them to drip slowly. Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold,” the warning says. The service has also waned residents to protect pets from the cold.

It comes as a polar cold front sweeps across the U.S, with winter storm warnings currently in place in Michigan and Indiana. Winter weather advisories have been issued for other parts of those two states as well as in New York, Tennessee, Minnesota, and Alaska. Lake-effect snow warnings remain in effect for parts of Ohio, New York, and Pennsylvania until Tuesday night.

Miami, Florida, had its coldest start to December since 2019 this year, the average temperature hitting 68.57 degrees, roughly 4 degrees below the previous average for this time of year.

Freeze warnings were also in place in nine counties in Florida yesterday as temperatures plummeted as low as 31F.

“The cold blast will feel like January and will deliver a significant shock to hundreds of millions of people who may have gotten used to warm conditions during much of the autumn,” AccuWeather lead long-range meteorologist Paul Pastelok said.
