Moon Rae Tattoo, one of the first women-owned tattoo studios in Sioux Falls, is closing its doors after five years of providing a “clean, calm, private and compassionate environment for people of all backgrounds and identities,” according to a Thursday Instagram post by the owner.

This announcement comes after the tattoo shop opened at 2005 S. Minnesota Ave. after owner and artist Allison Rae purchased the building in 2019 and opened in January 2020, before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Along with Rae, three additional resident artists provided tattooing services for the business.

According to Moon Rae Tattoo’s website, Rae’s booking schedule has been closed “indefinitely” after moving to North Carolina. She has nearly a decade of tattooing experience in the Midwest. She said in an Instagram private message she chose to step away from tattooing and close her business for personal reasons.

Thursday’s social media post stated Moon Rae Tattoo would be closing at the end of the year.

At this time, Rae did not have further details to share but said she would share an official statement and resident artists’ future plans once the transition is finalized.

“Of course, with all endings, there are new beginnings…so stay tuned to see what the future holds,” Rae said on her Instagram page. “Thank you for 5 solid years of blood, sweat, and tears everyone! I will cherish all of these memories for a lifetime.”
